Welcome to Religion 1 at MercyHigh School!  First, congratulations to you all for starting a new chapter in your life, how exciting! How blessed are all of you to begin that chapter at MercyHigh School.  My classroom door is always open to you.  Religion class is a place where you can feel like you are “home away from home” and I am always here to help you all with anything I can! As you walk into class with your materials and belongings, I also ask you bring Dignity, Integrity, Respect, and the ability to open your heart and mind to God.  It is our goal as a class to study, understand, and appreciate the bedrock foundation of the Catholic heritage on which our school community’s identity is based.  For Catholic students that heritage ideally will be the foundation for your entire lives.

I. Chapter 7-The Scriptures (use the two worksheets, test, and class notes to study this section)

  • What does PRIMA stand for? Why do we use PRIMA today when reading scriptures?
  • Be able to identify how to look up Bible Passages

 (example: LK 8.31-38)

  • Be able to discuss the Parable of the Prodigal Son.
  • Know the 4 main sections of both the Old and New Testaments
  • What are the four Gospel books?

 

 

II. Chapter 11 Spirituality and Prayer (use text book and notes to study this section)

§  Be able to define spirituality & unconditional love

§  Jesus’ Response to Fears pg.275

§  Be able to answer all questions on p.279

§  Identify and explain each of the 5 different forms of prayer

 

 

III. 40 gifts in 40 days project

§  Explain the connection between 40 gifts project and Lent.

§  What was an important life lesson learnt from this project?

§  How can we apply this project with growing in our spirituality?

§  What was the most memorable gift you gave during the 40 gifts project?

§  What was the most memorable response from a recipient?

 

 

IV. Liturgical Year ENTIRE YEAR information (Ch10 & class notes)

 LENT TRIDUUM EASTER: (Ch10, class notes and test to review this section)

  • Color that represents each season
  • Know what day the seasons begins and ends.
  • What does the Paschal Triduum? When does it begin and end?
  • Why is every Sunday a little Easter?
  • Liturgical Year- what does the Liturgical calendar represent?
  • What is the meaning/importance of the liturgical year?
  •  Know all the holy days of obligation

 

 

V. Self Esteem: (study class notes and test)

  • Vocab- Self Esteem, Healthy Self Esteem, Low Self Esteem, Integrity and Honesty
  • Ways to develop and grow your self esteem (know 6 of the 12 ways) 3 from each!
  • What are the effects of low self-esteem?
  • What are the effects of being egotistical?

VI. Sexuality and Relationships (study class notes, worksheets, notes on movie from Pam Stenzel)

 

  • Define sexuality

 

  • Identify four statements about sexuality (notes in class)

 

  • Identify the Right Relationships Chart and answer both questions (ws)

 

  • Examination of Conscience…choose one question from any section that stood out to you the most. MEMORIZE that question and your answer.

 

  • What did you realize about yourself from the WHOS CHOICES worksheet and I AM WHO I AM worksheet?

 

  • KNOW facts on Article-You can become a confident woman by believing in God’s Truth and questions attached.

 

  • Worksheet- notes on Sex has physical, emotional and spiritual aspects-know 4bullet point statements and vocabulary (chastity, abstinence, lust, fornication, adultery)

 

  • “sex still has a price tag” movie notes worksheet

 

  • Be able to discuss the following statement Pam Stenzel makes at the beginning of her presentation:“If you have sex outside of one, permanent, monogamous relationship, you will pay.” (discuss in detail the physical, emotional, and spiritual consequences of engaging in sexual relations before marriage.)

 

  • STD’s: Chlamydia, Herpes, HPV, HIV/AIDS, (Bacterial vs. Viral)

 

  • Know Pure Womanhood worksheets and questions.

 

 

VII. Take home Essay Question:

 

As part of knew knowledge on Love, Sexuality, and Relationships, your take home part of the final is:

 

 To write a letter to your future daughter.  In the letter, you are to discuss your hopes and dreams for her, including what you would like her to know about relationships and love. Of all of the things we discussed and read in class this year, what would you like to tell your daughter-and why?
